What you'll need

Before you begin, gather these essential materials from your kit to ensure a smooth crafting experience.

Latch hook tool

A specialised tool with a hinged latch for pulling yarn through canvas.

Canvas

A mesh fabric base with evenly spaced holes for your design.

Pre-cut yarn

Short pieces of yarn in your chosen colors, ready to use.

Pattern guide

A color-coded chart showing where each yarn color should be placed.

Latch Hooking 101: Mastering the Latch Hook Knot

1

Fold a piece of the pre-cut yarn in half.

2

Insert the hook under one horizontal bar of the canvas (from front to back) and bring it up through the square, latch open.

3

Place the folded yarn loop over the hook, then drop the ends below the latch bar.

4

Pull the hook back through the square; the latch will close automatically, securing the loop.

5

Pull the two loose yarn ends through the loop and tighten gently.

6

Repeat, row by row. Work across one row before moving up to the next.

Step-by-Step Workflow: From First Hook to Finish

Step 1: Start in a Corner

Work from the bottom (left or right) and move across row by row.

Step 2: Follow the Colours

Match each yarn colour to the printed pattern. Check every few rows to stay aligned.

Step 3: Fill the Canvas

Keep your knots even and consistent. Flip the canvas occasionally to ensure it's sitting flat.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Once all yarn is knotted, trim (if needed) any long tails, and attach the backing or insert your pillow form according to kit instructions.
